Problem with HOMM 2 and xscreensaver

I had HOMM 2 running just fine on Fedora 21 with Xfce until things went wrong and I had to reinstall with Fedora 25. I have /home on its own partition, so that all of my personal stuff, including my DOSBOX games, were safe. Now, the game runs OK except for one thing: xscreensaver doesn't recognize mouse movements or keystrokes inside the game's full screen window. Once it activates, it goes away as soon as I do anything, but it leaves the game in windowed mode for about a minute, then suddenly restores full screen until the next time. I'd really like to get this working properly, as the way it's working right now is very inconvenient. The only change I've made is to comment out a line specifying the resolution because it's no longer relevant.

I found the answer. I thought I'd installed Wine, but I hadn't. Once that was done, everything worked fine.

Re: Problem with HOMM 2 and xscreensaver

I think that HOMM2 is the best in the series, with fantastic CD soundtrack as well.

I run some DOSBox stuff here in CentOS7 too and I don't have this problem. I don't know how Wine installation has any effect on this, perhaps you're running the game by invoking the .BAT in wine which then fires up DOSBox?

Anyway, I run them directly with my specific DOSBox .conf files. Setting that I can think of that may have any impact on this problem are:

Fullscreen resolution. Mine is set to monitor's native, 1920x1200 in my case.
Output mode: I always use openglnb, which uses OpenGL w/o bilinear filter. Overlay feels slightly better color-wise, but in many cases has a problem with sound stutter when mouse is active.

No, I invoke dosbox directly. And, alas, the fix doesn't always work. Oh well...

Re: Problem with HOMM 2 and xscreensaver

I've now found a fix that really works the way it should. I run HOMM 2 by invoking DOSBox with a custom .conf file that sets things up and plays the game. This doesn't seem to work right from a desktop icon, so I created a little shell script to do the job and the icon just runs the script. Now, I've added two lines to the script. Before starting dosbox it runs:

xscreensaver-command -exit

which kills the daemon, so there's no active screensaver. After dosbox exits, the script runs:

xscreensaver &

to restart the daemon in the background. Not exactly elegant, but it works.
