Not my responsibility, it's yours Gnome vs bug reporter.

Background

I use a version of Fedora 26 Gnome that is installed onto a btrfs file system. I chose this btrfs file system because the host hardware is an SSD. Btrfs supposedly does fewer I/O operations per write than ext4 or xfs. Thus, one is advised to use btrfs to extend an SSD's life.

I use GNOME. Mostly I enjoy this interface because of the ability to install extensions. One extension I appreciate the most is Taskbar by Zpydr

RANT 1

When /home is installed onto an ext4 or xfs formatted partition, Gnome works flawlessly. When /home is installed onto the /btrfs system, gnome-shell locks up and loops at 100% cpu. Sometimes it may be with a different "user extension", but always gnome-shell runs at 100% cpu if /home is installed on the btrfs partition.

I discovered over time that the settings for extensions is stored in ~/config/dconf/user I did some experimenting and using the Linux ln -s command to relocate the .config/dconf to a /ext4 partition,
the problem disappears or is much reduced.

So, I raised a bug report directly to Gnome and provided a representative gnome-shell-extension to the Gnome project. Gnome's first level response
TaskBar««««««« Not my problem «««««gnome-shell«««Not my Problem ««« Taskbar

I am really peeved (off) at the Gnome project. I checked out Gnome 3.259 (3.26 for Fedora 27) and the issues are still there.

RANT 2
There is another shell bug that has to do with the keyboard. The alt+[key above tab] should be a dead key, But it is not. It is the same as the left-super+[key above tab] Its been many many months (Since Fedora 25 day one and no distributed correction) Yes, I bet it is going to be there in Fedora 27.

RANT 3
Printer Setup. In the past (Fedora 25 Gnome and Fedora 26 + any non Gnome software) has a "Print Test Page" to assist you in verifying that the proper driver was installed. This test button has been removed and the printer setup leaves you in the blind. You have no specially engineered page to show shades from black to light grey. I use a laser printer, but the setup is geared to someone with an Ink based printer.
Can't we go back to Gnome 3.22 and do things right?

I am really peeved (off) at the Gnome project. I checked out Gnome 3.259 (3.26 for Fedora 27) and the issues are still there.

Is there a way to fork a version of Gnome so that we could have an interface that is stable, corrected, and moves forward more slowly. Broken software needs to be fixed before moving on instead of Gnome just presenting new buggy features.

am really "peeved (off)" at the Gnome project. I checked out Gnome 3.259 (3.26 for Fedora 27) and the issues are still there. I have to write this past message three times, because it is my triple rant.

There is a Gnome fork! It's called Mate, and I love it!

200ms is a massive delay. If a UI cannot keep up with KB inputs from a touch typist or gamer it is quite frankly pathetic coding on their part. I hope that wasn't the official response

Not quite, it was a response to a blocker bug which I find hilarious, did not see that coming. If interested here is the whole meeting: https://meetbot.fedoraproject.org/fe...16.01.log.html

This is fairly routine for GNOME bugs. Another glorious example is this - https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=682126

GNOME only looks for background images in ~/Pictures (or specific system folders). The bug linked above makes for fascinating reading.

Re: Not my responsibility, it's yours Gnome vs bug reporter.

I created a shell script that creates an xml file. That xml file has a list of images I use it as

makexml.sh name folder1 folder 2 forlder 3 ... folder n

Within each folder1.. n it searches for the *png and *jpg and create a list.

I can repost my makexml.sh again.

It has one internal parameter. Duration. I set my duration value to 12 hours. That is, I get a fresh background image twice per day.
The negative aspect. Each folder is searched in alphanumeric sequence.

My setup
/usr/share/backgrounds/leslie/extras and my collection is in leslie/extras

Within /usr/share/backgrounds I have leslie as an ln -s /data/leslie/extras leslie
When I change Fedoras or use multiple fedoras, they each point to the common /data/leslie/extras

I can make that script available again. I use gnome tweak tool /Desktop setting to enable the xml file

Also, tried out Gnome 3.25.90, one of the non advertised new features is that system tray is gone. Asked few developers and response was that it is so by design

This may explain where the features are going

I suspect it's because system tray belongs to the Distribution. SUSE Linux put it's stuff into the system tray (eg yast, and working applications ).

I noticed that the 3.26 is due out one week after F27's freeze on software. Suppose 3.26 is late, I presume we will remain with Gnome 3.24 for another sick months.

3.25.x will usually be considered new feature. 3.26 will simply be an update. F27, I am sure, will be released with GNOME 3.26.
