    nvidia driver query

    Hi.

I'm new to fedora. As Fedora seems to update to the latest version of the kernel, is this a problem if I use the nvidia private drivers?

    Thank you.

    Re: nvidia driver query

    Hello.

If you install via rpmfusion akmods will take care of that. If you use nvidia driver (https://www.if-not-true-then-false.c...-nvidia-guide/) dkms will do it.

Edit: meaning that both akmods or dkms will take care of building the nvidia module and loading into the kernel. So you have no problem when the kernel changes.

    Good luck.

What method do you recommend? Which is more stable?

I use the nvidia propietary driver method as explained in the guide (https://www.if-not-true-then-false.c...-nvidia-guide/), installed with dkms. I had little problems with the kmods building the module so decided to give the propietary driver a try and worked better for me.

In the very few occasions that dkms fails, you can log Ctrl+Alt+F2, login in text mode as root, cd to the dir where you have downloaded the driver, reinstall and reboot.

Consider that you will have to take care of install the new driver when it is released. If you use the rpm method that is not necessary.

    Re: nvidia driver query

I use akmod for building kmod-nvidia without problems.
But there is problem with dnf (I'm not sure...).
When you install a new kernel with dnf (in console or with software like yumex-dnf or other) akmod build and install the new kmod after kernel is installed.

If you quit console or software before akmod finished his work, akmod fail and don't build or install kmod-nvidia.

It takes 30 to 45 seconds before you leave the console or software, and then everything works well.

    Re: nvidia driver query

so there's no text dump showing progress like there is with dkms? that's more an issue with akmod than dnf. when you update with yum or dnf using dkms it displays verbose output of progress when that driver migration is taking place.

No there is no text showing progress for building and installing the new kmod.
To see the progress I open a console and do a top, and I can see the progress (build with cc (compiler), and install with dnf).

    Re: nvidia driver query

    Hi.

I have been looking at the installation by rpmfusion and I have some doubts.

In the part where it says to install cuda: dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda is this necessary? I do not know what is cuda?

What about the vulkan? dnf install vulkan is this necessary? Do not know what is vulkan?

    Re: nvidia driver query

I've used rpmfusion nvidia in the past and i never installed cuda or vulkan. I just installed the driver.
