XFCE has its own window manager and lives peacefully side by side with others.

Hi xia4q
Welcome to the forum.
Here is some feedback.
Are you using Gnome Wayland, or Gnome.xorg. If the former, when you are in the process of logging into the system, before entering the password, there is a small gear wheel, below center and to the right. click on it and select gnome.org option
Usually that will solve your problem(s) with Gnome. Otherwise, as was mentioned, review and choose from XFCE, Mate, or even try gnome2 via that gear wheel.
Let us know your success.

We get too soon old, and too late smart!
Both MATE and Cinnamon are now GTK+3 based but still very good alternatives. Another is Budgie but not for Fedora as it isn't officially available
Window Maker!
Window Maker's name always reminds me of the 1980s Porsche 911 Turbo aka Widow Maker
cinnamon or compose your own de.
KDE finally got reasonably usable again in F25. Not sure about F26. But I'd still use other apps for browsing and e-mail than the KDE standards.
Can you solve your problem by using creating a kdesu group and then
provide ownership to kdesu package to root, with group kdesu.
if user is member of group kdeu, he will have or can have rwx privileges.

One more vote for XFCE. I de-uglified following this guide: https://cd-rw.org/t/de-uglyfying-majaro-linux-xfce/352 and now XFCE looks good with nice icons and crisp sharp fonts. I also had to disable Compositor to get rid of video tearing.
