Fedora 26 Upgrade Test Day 2017-06-30
    June 28, 2017 / sumantrom / 0 Comments

Friday, 2017-06-30, is the Fedora 26 Upgrade Test Day! As part of this planned Change for Fedora 26, we need your help to test if everything runs smoothly!
    Why Upgrade Test Day?

As we approach the Final Release date for Fedora 26. Most users will be upgrading to Fedora 26 and this test day will help us understand if everything is
working perfectly. This test day will cover both a Gnome graphical upgrade and an upgrade done using DNF .

I'll rather quietly sit back, take off the shoes, and wait from people to report bugs here, on this sub-forum. Then I'll try to do remote diagnostics (finding root cause of the problems), as I usually do. Mental exercise, which I really start enjoying/loving!

Yeah, I'll pass on that too. I prefer a clean install so I really couldn't care less about the system upgrade functionality working or not. So I'll let the people who actually want the feature have the joy or pain involved for now.

Re: Fedora 26 Upgrade Test Day 2017-06-30

I am a Fedora fanatic. It is one of the best advanced Linux systems available in the entire world. The Fedora development community is super busy with a) bug fixes, b) writing and testing code and c) new design and developments and package distribution and bugzilla feedback.
    .
The Fedora group mentioned can't do everything. Fedora Linux resources are not limitless. From what I see, Fedora has about 20 strong developer-leaders. They do not have access to 100 different computer configurations.

I will be doing the dnf release upgrade testing. Today I will perform a fresh F25 system install to a empty partition and prepare for the test.

It is the very least I can do for the 10+ years of free Fedora Linux versions that I have enjoyed.

    If you can, please help.

    Cheers

Is it O.K to upgrade from Fedora 24 directly to Fedora 26, bypassing Fedora 25 ?

It should work depending on any third-party repositories you have used to install other packages from being ready for Fedora 26 as well.

Currently only one 3rd party repository & already installed it's package (qTox). It is from here:

    https://software.opensuse.org/downlo...x&package=qtox

Currently not available for Fedora 26. But they will add to Fedora 26. They are active & I recieved from them 2 updates.

What will happened if upgraded before they offer repositoriy for Fedora 26 ?

And command to be used!: sudo dnf system-upgrade download --refresh --releasever=26

    Good Luck!

as per the FAQ it should go through successfully but you need to be prepared for possible failure due to broken or conflicting dependencies. you would be wise to backup your working system before attempting an upgrade anyhow. You could upgrade to F25 which is already supported by the qtox packagers. Fedora 24 will become end of life approximately 4 weeks after general public release of Fedora 26. So you have a while yet to decide.

I have already upgraded to F26 Beta. Can I still participate in the test?

Re: Fedora 26 Upgrade Test Day 2017-06-30

I performed a re-install to F26 beta on my laptop.

So far, everything, with one exception, seems to be working perfectly fine.

The one exception is Civilization V under steam. It starts, then crashes. I can run other games under steam, but not my favorite, Civ5.

    Any pointers?

Re: Fedora 26 Upgrade Test Day 2017-06-30

The upgrade is running now on my computer. I installed the plugin and then the release upgrade line. I needed to add. --allowerasing to the right end.

32 files will be downgraded and around 3300 files will be updated. I give it about 4 hrs, because of the internet speed and my ddr2 system speed.

I had posted some bugzilla entries that are still present with Anaconda. And with Gnome. The same Gnome bugs are in the other distributions that use Gnome.

Many of us help in other ways. We don't all have unlimited time and resources to give to every aspect of the operating system though.

So it isn't just because this test doesn't interest me from a user point of view, I genuinely had more pressing tasks on a blue marble we call Earth in a Galaxy far far away from Planet Fedora. This evening I intend to spend with the family.

Tim, if you have a spare disk, or a spare computer, then here is what has to be done.

    a) Have installed an up-to-date Fedora 25
    b) install the dnf plugin (google for more info)
    c) Run the dnf system upgrade as per the web page instructions
    d) Reboot and verify that you have a working Fedora 26
