    Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

    Hi everyone,

I asked this same question 2 days ago in the NVIDIA devtalk community, but there seems to be no one interested in providing an answer to this.

So, I will put the content of my question here, since it is maybe something Fedora specific rather then NVIDIA specific, though it directly relates to the NVIDIA display driver which I already suggested in the threads title.

    Here we go...

my employer just provided me a new notebook, a Dell Precision. I configured the notebook with a NVIDIA Quadro M2000M graphics.

I am running Fedora 25 OS. As I digged around, I found out, that there is the possibility of using some RPM Fusion repo driver for the Xorg server (https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia). As there was a recent switch in Fedora from X11 to Wayland, I decided to stick with the solution to install the official NVIDIA display driver and disabling the nouveau driver.

I downloaded the recent matching NVIDIA driver package (375.20) here: http://www.nvidia.de/download/driver...s.aspx/111627/. Then, I followed a procedure described here: https://www.if-not-true-then-false.c...-nvidia-guide/. This included booting Fedora in runlevel 3, disabling the nouveau driver, etc.

This was the best guide I found so far. Anyway, I had to add two seperate steps:

    1. Disabling secure boot while running the NVIDIA installer (due to a kernel error)
    2. After rebooting, I had to downgrade the "mutter" package from 3.22.2 to 3.22.1 (the most recent package caused a black screen after reboot, informations found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/c...ayland_switch/)

So, after performing all those steps, I was able to startup Fedora running with the Quadro M2000M graphics. Calling the NVIDIA settings dialog (from shell: nvidia-settings), all informations there seem to prove a stable running NVIDIA graphics.

So, today, there was a Fedora update, including an upgrade of the kernel from 4.8.10 to 4.8.11. I downloaded the updates and rebooted my system and I ran into the same black screen problem. I was able to solve this problem by downloading the NVIDIA driver package again via wget from the shell in runlevel 3 and then running the installer again.

I suppose, this is not the way it is intended to work, as I registered the driver with DKMS and therefore I assume, the driver should have been recompiled for the new kernel. And I fairly doubt, I have to run this procedure over and over again, everytime there is a kernel update in my distribution.

Hence, this points toward my question to the community: What am I missing here? Why wasn't the driver kernel module recompiled via DKMS? Is there anything in the nvidia-* command list, that provides some functionality regarding this problem?

After booting the new kernel, but before recompiling the driver, there were (obviously) error messages in the kernel ring buffer which I was able to grep throug dmesg output. After recompiling, there seems everything to be ok.

    I appreciate any help.

    ##

So far, this my problem and as you can see, I am confused about the DKMS feature which I suppose doesn't work as intended?

Does anyone provide deeper knowledge of the DKMS functionality?

    Best regards

i believe you may be missing the akmod components from rpmfusion. with those installed every time you update the kernel it should also regenerate the nvidia bits.

    Hi,

    thanks for your quick reply.

Please correct me, if I'm talking complete nonsense, but isn't akmods something similar to DKMS and therefore not necessary for DKMS to recompile any kernel modules after kernel updates?

Anyway, I checked and installed the akmods packages.

    Regards

    Re: Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

    Hi,

I posted on the nVidia board about the same issue: F25 + M2000M and no answer.

I installed the nVidia driver and rpmfusion, My problem is now, after quite a few attempts that /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that fbdev and vesa are loaded while the xorg.conf (modified by me and nVidia) doesn't load them. I blacklisted the nouveau driver. Apart from that, "NVIDIA X Server Settings" still indicates that the nVidia driver is still not loaded.

    Any idea is welcome

    Re: Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

I looked into the Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old and found a remarkable message about nVidia referring to /var/log/messages. However, in that log I can't find a good hint on what's happening and why. Please see attached both Xorg logs. Note: I renamed Xorg.0.log.old to Xorg.1.log because it was regarded as invalid filename.
If someone can give a hint why the nvidia driver does work on 800x600 and not on full HD, it's much appreciated.

    Thanks

Question Re: Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

Duh... I am looking into what you have provided, ...kerk, actually I looked in both logs, and they are different, and exhibit DIFFERENT behavior!

    Xorg.0.log (previous one):
    [ 2537.664] X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
    [ 2537.664] Build Operating System: 4.7.9-200.fc24.x86_64
    [ 2537.664] Current Operating System: Linux Klerksdorp 4.8.11-300.fc25.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Nov 28 18:24:51 UTC 2016 x86_64

    [ 2537.665] Build Date: 23 November 2016 10:18:22AM
    Let me comment here:
    Blacklisted nouveau driver - Disabled Nvidia Open Source nv driver;
    VESA disabled - VESA disabled (Video Electronics Standards Association standards???);
    nomoset - KMS disabled
rhgb - Red Hat Graphic Boot enabled (I personally would remove this option)
quiet option enforced - not a good idea, since we need to have as much as possible log information!

    In other words, I would have the following: Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.8.11-300.fc25.x86_64 root=/dev/mapper/fedora00-root ro rd.lvm.lv=fedora00/root rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap rd.lvm.lv=fedora00/swap nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau video=vesa:off

    And the following:
[ 2537.666] (II) systemd-logind: logind integration requires -keeptty and -keeptty was not provided, disabling logind integration
    [ 2537.667] (--) PCI:*(0:0:2:0) 8086:191b:1462:116c rev 6, Mem @ 0xdd000000/16777216, 0xb0000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x0000f000/64, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072

Both of your Video HW are detected by PCIe discovery algorithm: 0:2:0 PCIe address for INTEL Integrated GFX, and 1:0:0 PCIe address for Nvidia one (for me, PERFECTLY valid setup - not going to explain it, take it as granted).

So, in other words, your proprietary Nvidia driver should enable modeset later, after its download (this is how I understand it).

    Now... Excerpts from the log:

It is clear from the logs, isn't it?!

In Xorg.0.log you have downloaded NOT quite real Nvidia driver, something else emulating it, so GFX failed, at the end did not find the proper Nvidia driver!

In Xorg.1.log you have downloaded REAL Nvidia driver, but for some reasons GFX failed to initialize it!

    Re: Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

Thank you for analyzing the logs and coming to the same conclusions as I did.

The Xorg.1.log should start the full HD screen and fails to do so. The Xorg.0.log starts in 800x600 mode.

    Nvidia (which one???) driver loaded:
This is the driver for the M2000M, but I combined loading the rpmfusion akmod/kmod. Since all the information around is rather confusing, I don't know if this is good or not.

but for some reasons GFX failed to initialize it!
Yes, and it's not clear to me why that does happen. So do you have any suggestion on what to do?

    Thank you.

Question Re: Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

    Duh, duh...

I like very much Xorg.1.log. Do not download or upgrade/downgrade, or install/remove ANYTHING else (let us try to keep the situation as it is, with TRUE Nvidia driver playing/sinking IN).

I need some more time to think (and search) myself. For the starters, I will suggest the following (kernel booting like):
    BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.8.11-300.fc25.x86_64 root=/dev/mapper/fedora00-root ro rd.lvm.lv=fedora00/root rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap rd.lvm.lv=fedora00/swap nomodeset rhgb quiet nouveau.modeset=0 rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau video=vesa:off
Remove in RED, and also post dmesg logs, so we (probably me) can see what it really going on there!

As you may realize, the Xorg.1.log is not about the current situation. So I'll try to get back to it, but I'll have no graphics then. As you requested: the dmesg log. There's no mention about nvidia or NVIDIA or whichever spelling, but nouveau is in there.

    Hello AntiKythera (AKa Mister Teacher),

Could you, please, facilitate to better to organize this thread? In other words, could you, please, move all replies from #4 to the following thread:

I believe the problem is with initrrd / dracut. You have to disable the "nvidia driver" being added to the initrd image. I don't have nvidia so here is what I do for the virtual box kernel model.
Here is my vbox.conf under dracut.d

    # Omit vbox drivers from the initfile so that dkms loads the drivers instead

    omit_drivers+=" vboxdrv*"

    # end of file
You can see my summary here:

    Re: Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

    Hi jbkt23,

    sorry for the delayed answer.

So, in short: Thank you very much for your suggestion! It was the solution I was looking for.

I added a nvidia.conf file in my /etc/dracut.conf.d folder with the content you provided in your example:

    Code:
    omit_drivers+="nvidia"
After the recent Fedora update of my kernel from 4.8.12 to 4.8.13, I rebooted my system and the Nvidia driver seems to have been rebuilt like it should.

    Graphics seem to run correctly.

There are just two notices I can make:

    1. When running
    Code:
    dkms status
, both Nvidia modules are listed (for each kernel):

    Code:
    nvidia, 375.20, 4.8.12-300.fc25.x86_64, x86_64: installed
    nvidia, 375.20, 4.8.13-300.fc25.x86_64, x86_64: installed
Should I consider this as a problem or is this the normal behaviour, having both modules in the DKMS framework active?

    2. Running the nvidia-settings application, I can see, that the GPU utilization dedicated memory usage now is about 20%, which was previously around 10% with the same graphical usage (two open browsers with a few tabs, two terminals, a simple editor and of course Gnome itself).

Is it possible, that DKMS did not compile the Nvidia driver, like it was done before, when I started the compiling manually (which would result in a different usage of the GPU)?

    Regards

    Re: Fedora 25 - NVIDIA Quadro M2000M - Display Driver 375.20 - DKMS problems?

So, this is quite interesting and therefore I'd like to add it to my thread.

After the last update of Fedora, updating the kernel version from 4.8.13 to 4.8.14, DKMS again successfully compiled the Nvidia driver package. Now, running the same number of applications as I mentioned in my last posting, and additionally running a VirtualBox installation with an active Windows 10, a password manager GUI, a chat application (Slack) and Thunderbird, my GPU usage relating to it's dedicated memory, is about 7% (ca. 290 MB).

Hence, I suppose, something has changed, either the kernel processing or the compiled Nvidia driver?

It doesn't mean, that I had performance issues with a higher usage of the graphics dedicated memory, but it is an verifiable difference and it makes me again think about the driver compilation differences.

    Did anyone notice something similar?

P.S.: I had to edit my previous posting, as I accidentally referred to the GPU Utilization as I intended to mean the dedicated memory of the GPU.

    FYI:

I just upgraded the Nvidia display driver to it's most recent version (375.26), see: http://www.nvidia.com/download/drive...x/112992/en-us, and it compiled without any problems through DKMS for the actual kernel:

    Code:
    $ dkms status

    nvidia, 375.26, 4.8.14-300.fc25.x86_64, x86_64: installed

Just regular ol vanilla Nvidia driver? That sounds very intriguing!
